A Word...

Okay. There is no denying it. Bruce Springsteen is probably one of the most (if not, THE most) bootlegged artists ever. There is TONS of audio and video out there! The videos vary greatly in quality, availability, and content, etc. However, information available on these titles is sparse, and it is generally hard to know if it's worth obtaining. Hopefully the information provided here will help you out.

Description: Remarkable compilation of clips from a huge variety of sources across Bruce's entire career. There is everything here from pro-shot footage, stage shot camcorder footage , TV chats show appearances, Awards shows, Benefit shows, political rally's, monument dedications and even a home wedding video !
The quality varies as much as the content. Some of the earlier footage in particular comes from high generation sources and much of it is now available in better quality elsewhere. However, there are some real gems that you won’t find on other DVDs. Highly recommended for the sheer thoroughness with which Bruce's career is covered.

Title: Ghost on the Balcony

Format: PAL
Generation: Various
Video: pro-shot

Rating: 8
Description: Excellent compilation of camcorder footage, pro shot live footage and TV appearances during the GOTJ tour. The DVD opens with some unique amateur video of an impromptu performance of "Thunder Road" from the theatre balcony after his show in Naples, although the song is barely audible. Following that is some great quality pro-shot footage of 5 songs from the Frankfurt '96 show. The pro shot footage from Antwerp is sadly silent. Also included is some camcorder video of the Proposition 209 Rally in '96 from very close range. The remainder of the DVD consists of familiar US and European TV appearances. Reasonably low generation sources are used throughout.
It should be noted that you really need to be a fan of the song "The Ghost of Tom Joad" to view this in one sitting. There are no less than six different renditions included.

Notes (sourced from Backstreets):
---------------------------------
Show-opener "Adam Raised a Cain" is as powerful as it comes, and it set the bar for the early part of the set in Paris. Highlights for me were "Spirit," a request for which happened to coincide with the setlist, another powerhouse in "Rendezvous" (a perfect fit for the setting), and a first outing in Europe for "Janey, Don't You Lose Heart." Bruce was so fired up during "Darlington County" that he left Nils behind when he shot off to one side to see the crowd, and their duet was conducted with Bruce on the run across the front apron.

Max may need stronger specs... he started "I'm on Fire" when Bruce was holding up a request for "Fire." They soon got it right, and Clarence comes into his own here with the deepest voice in the band; the two of them mugged it up, milking the pause for all it was worth -- that was magic. With even more magic to come, as Bruce took over the piano for a solo version of "For You." I'm sure I heard a pin drop up the back somewhere, and I felt bad but I had to take a couple of rare pics of Bruce at the keys...

What has become a fairly standard end-of-set section was augmented by a show-closing "Out in the Street," but if I'm honest, "Badlands" works better for that purpose. Fairly standard encores also, but of course this being Paris we were treated to not one but two guest appearances: Elliott Murphy of course, but now his son Gaspard joins in too, also a guitarist. Gaspard stayed as close to Bruce as possible during "Born to Run" to check out Bruce's moves. The look on Bruce's face showed that he was only too happy to be passing on his superior knowledge. Elliott shared a microphone with Soozie during "American Land," but -- especially through a long lens -- it was obvious that he had no idea how the song goes!

So, some moments that were truly wonderful. It would have been interesting if some of the other requests Bruce plucked out had coincided with the alternates on the setlist such as "Tougher Than the Rest," "Land of Hope and Dreams," and "Lost in the Flood"... there's always something more to look forward to, isn't there?

Personal notes:
---------------
Obviously this is pretty awesome footage as we all already witnessed from the Vimeo-files a while back. This DVD is transferred from it's original masterfiles and therefore has much more quality. The original cam sound has been replaced with Crystal Cat's stunning recording to make this a very enjoyable watch. Not much more to ask for for a Bruce boot, perhaps next time a FULL show :-) and leaving the 16:9 mode intact. But there's always something left to beg for. Many thanks to It's Boss Time for sharing his stuff!
Enjoy,
Wizardus

Misc Info
--------------------------------------------------------------------
First DVD was edited and authored all those months ago in CS3, the second in CS4. No real effect on the outcome, I'm just saying for the sake of having complete and accurate lineage.

It's Boss Time's footage edited from the raw DV tapes, and Moerie's footage edited directly from the raw .MOD files. Many thanks to the both of them.
The third angle (The single DVD on a tripod) was re-encoded from the DVD, but I hardly used any footage from that anyway.

Menu template and covers made by Route 67 A.K.A. Candy.

About the video intro before the menu - Yeah, I know, it's a bit shit. It was better in my imagination than what it turned out as. But hey, what can ya do?

And I apologise for the unfortunate placement of the Danny message at the end of the credits on DVD 1. I never noticed that when I originally made it.

Release Notes
--------------------------------------------------------------------
My god... I think "Blood, Sweat and Tears" would be a better title at this stage!

I know there is some disbelief about why this release took so long to see the light of day - but I assure you, what I said all those months ago was true and still is. I finished the project, and sent out a copy of both DVDs to Wizardus for him to look over and upload. I realised that I'd actually forgotten to burn DVD 1, and instead had just printed the label onto it. So I resent a working
copy of DVD 1 the day after. But the first package never arrived, only the second package did. So then Wizardus had a copy of DVD 1, but no DVD 2 as that was in the original package that got lost in transport.

Simultaneusly to this, I suddenly, unexpectedly and rather rudely lost access to my desktop computer, all my hard drives, camera equipment, recording equipment, so on and so forth. So, by proxy, I lost all the files for Arnhem.
Me being the dumbass that I am never thought to make any copies. At that time, I was expecting to have my equipment returned to me in mid-august with all the data still present, so we post-poned the project, planning to just upload it as soon as I got it back.

Here we are, almost 2009, and I still do not have any equipment or files back, the reason for which I still don't really want to make public - but really, on the small chance that anybody is curious enough, it is not that hard to work out.

I decided that enough was enough. I was going stop waiting and simply re-edit the second DVD and finally get this project finished and uploaded.

But even then, was it that simple? Hell no. So many god dammned problems and software crashes every step of the way. IT took me almost 3 full days to get the final edited show our of Premiere and encoded & authored onto DVD. I wont bore you with the details but suffice to say I have only just finished, at 11:15 PM on Christmas Eve. Yeah, I'm sad. Bite me ;)

So here it is. I hope it is worth the wait (and the effort). Merry Cristmas! :)
